The criteria establish 9 essential standards that reputable hybrid publishers must meet, including transparent fee structures, published contract terms, and rigorous editorial vetting.

Essential Criteria Checklist

  1. Vetting & Selection: Reputable hybrid publishers reject unmarketable manuscripts rather than accepting every paying applicant.
  2. Author Royalty Splits: Hybrid contracts should offer authors at least 50% of net sales receipts in exchange for shared production investment.
  3. Distribution Standards: Provision of full trade distribution through established wholesalers like Ingram or Independent Publishers Group (IPG).

The IBPA encourages authors to evaluate hybrid publishing offers carefully against published transparency guidelines.
