Spotify Expands Audiobook Streaming Allocation to Independent Authors

Independent authors distributing through Draft2Digital gain broader access to Spotify’s premium subscriber audiobook streaming pool.

Spotify has expanded its audiobook streaming model to include a wider catalog of independently published titles distributed via Draft2Digital and Findaway Voices.

Under the expanded arrangement, Spotify Premium subscribers in major English-language markets receive 15 hours of monthly audiobook listening time included in their subscriptions, with authors paid based on listening time thresholds.

How the Compensation Model Functions

  1. Consumption-Based Payouts: Authors receive royalty payments calculated from the percentage of the audiobook listened to by premium subscribers.
  2. Non-Exclusive Distribution: Authors distributing through Findaway Voices and Draft2Digital retain non-exclusive rights, allowing simultaneous sale on Audible, Apple Books, and Google Play.
  3. Threshold Triggers: Payouts trigger at defined listening intervals (e.g., 20%, 50%, and 100% completion marks).

Market Outlook

Audiobook consumption has grown rapidly over the past three years, with subscription streaming model adoption accelerating among younger listeners. Independent authors report that inclusion in streaming catalogs provides new discovery channels alongside traditional ala carte retail sales.
